Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” Ephesians 6:10-11, CEV

Reflection: Tools in the toolbox

There’s a saying that ‘hard work beats talent if talent doesn’t work hard,’ which refers to the truth that relying on good genetics or natural talent will only get you so far in elite sport. Hard work is the absolute key to success.

This isn’t a direct point of today’s Bible passage, yet this verse reminds us that God has given us the tools for our success. God has given us these tools to fight off attacks from the Devil.  In life and in sport, not everything will go our way; there will often be disappointments, upsets, fear. Although God may not stop these from happening, he equips us with what we need to get through them.

The elite athlete will use disappointment and failures to become a better athlete, and similarly, Christians can use heartbreak and low points to lean into God and become closer to him.

Whoever you are and whatever your circumstance, God has put you in your current situation and he has equipped you to face it. Now, use those tools to build an absolute masterpiece.

Prayer:

God, thank you for giving us the tools that we need to succeed and to survive through the challenges that life throws our way. When challenges arise, help me to draw near to you and to take courage that you never give me more than I can handle. Amen.
