Reflection: Disappointment

(Further reading: Genesis 39 – The story of Joseph)

At the highest level, athletes have poured their hearts and souls into their sport. When they don’t reap the rewards or achieve their goals, it can cause crippling disappointment and heartbreak.  Failure and disappointment are an inevitable part of sport. Behind every sporting success story, there are countless others of disappointment and regret.

The story of Joseph shows us a man who seemed to be on track for greatness. Yet despite this, he went through enormous disappointments, including being betrayed by his family and then thrown into prison for years for a crime he didn’t commit. But through it all, he remained faithful, and God lifted him up.

We may never know the reason why we’re going through heartbreak or challenges in our lives, but one thing we can know for certain is that our God loves us, and is with us every step of the way. He can turn our tests into testaments, if we keep our eyes centred on him.

Prayer:

God, thank you that you love me no matter what I achieve. Please help me to stay faithful and patient when things aren’t going my way, and comfort me in the disappointments and failures.
