Reflection:  One day I walked into the largest red-light district in Asia. A slum with ten thousand girls for sale. Slaves. Yesterday I walked to work as a man blew the leaves off the street in front of me. Because stepping on leaves might make my life uncomfortable. Sometimes it’s hard to see Jesus in my everyday life, but I encountered him in a new way when I stared evil and injustice in the face. Following Jesus inevitably takes you to places of injustice and
oppression. Following Jesus inevitably burdens your heart with his. Following Jesus into these places and looking our beastliness in the face enables us to see his face. It brings healing and inexplicably – joy. We don’t find joy hiding in our swept clean suburbs but by following him to hard places to give and to love our neighbour. My Sunday school teacher really did get the song right – JOY – Jesus first, Yourself last and Others in between.
Question:Â Who is your neighbour and are you loving and serving them?
Prayer: Â Save us from our
selfish ambition and vain conceit God, and teach us to value others above ourselves. Amen.
