Reflection: Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” Matthew 16:24 NIV Now if I was Jesus’ marketing manager I would advise against this as his key message. It is, quite frankly,
appalling. That does NOT sound like a life filled with joy to me. It sounds like something to run, run as fast as you can like the gingerbread man, from. Let’s start with denying myself. What? I spend most of my waking hours doing the exact opposite of this. Then taking up my cross… I’m assuming this is more than buying a cute necklace and hanging it around my neck? This stuff is hard, and counter cultural. Can’t I just find joy in Instagram posts? Or am I settling for a thin veneer of faith when a deep and abiding joy is available when I follow Jesus?
Question: Are you going all the way with Christ?
Prayer: Help us, Lord, to find ourselves in you and to know the joy of taking up our cross. Amen.
