Journey Songs (Psalms of Ascent)

Day 4 of 14

NIV

Psalms 123:3-4

3Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy on us,

for we have endured no end of contempt.

4We have endured no end

of ridicule from the arrogant,

of contempt from the proud.

Reflection: Ridicule

Some days, the journey is hard. There are roadworks. There are delays. We breakdown. There is fighting. We can so easily try and reach the end in our own strength. The words from this Psalm are a cry for mercy. They are words that call out to God amid the familiar feeling of being on the receiving end of an angry tirade. This is often our lot in life. But this does not mean that we need to despair. For the contempt that we may feel from others is nothing compared to the contempt Jesus suffered, faced and endured on the cross. He did that for me. He did that for you. He did that so we could know and hide in God’s ever abundant mercy.

Question: How do you respond to the way people speak to you or about your faith?  How does the cross shape the way you deal with this?

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, you went through so much so that I could live. Give me the grace to respond to, and deal with the contempt I face as a Christian in a godly way.

Psalms 123:1-4

Psalm 123

A song of ascents.

1I lift up my eyes to you,

to you who sit enthroned in heaven.

2As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master,

as the eyes of a female slave look to the hand of her mistress,

so our eyes look to the Lord our God,

till he shows us his mercy.

3Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy on us,

for we have endured no end of contempt.

4We have endured no end

of ridicule from the arrogant,

of contempt from the proud.
