Reflection:  Series Introduction

Nothing makes a journey more enjoyable than having a great playlist to listen to. The Psalms of Ascent are journey songs, the songs that the Israelites would sing on their way to Jerusalem to worship God. Psalms speak so deeply to our condition. They are songs for us to hold onto as we journey through all of life’s ups and downs. So come walk with me as we journey through these Psalms and find the peace, hope, and comfort that only the Gospel brings.

Secure

I live in the shadow of a mountain. It dominates the skyline. It is referenced on the various signs and businesses around me. But no matter how hard I might try to find help in its constant presence, it cannot help me. This Psalm opens with a resounding claim that our help is from the Lord. That is a staggering thought! The God who simply spoke a word and brought this universe into existence is the one you can turn to for help. He is present with you in every moment through the Holy Spirit. When you are in trouble – from the deep, significant trials in your life, to the seemingly small moments – God is your help. We can so often find ourselves looking for help in the fleeting, finite things. Yet why run there, when you can run to the God of the universe? Through Jesus, you have been brought into the loving arms of your heavenly Father who watches over you every step you take. He will never give up on you. He will always be your help.

Question:   Where do you look for your help?  How do these verses provide comfort for you in your circumstances?

Prayer:  Heavenly Father, thank you that you are my present help in all I face. Help me rest secure in your love and grace that you have shown me in Jesus and that I can trust you in every moment of every day.

Psalms 121:1-8

Psalm 121

A song of ascents.

1I lift up my eyes to the mountains—

where does my help come from?

2My help comes from the Lord,

the Maker of heaven and earth.

3He will not let your foot slip—

he who watches over you will not slumber;

4indeed, he who watches over Israel

will neither slumber nor sleep.

5The Lord watches over you—

the Lord is your shade at your right hand;

6the sun will not harm you by day,

nor the moon by night.

7The Lord will keep you from all harm—

he will watch over your life;

8the Lord will watch over your coming and going

both now and forevermore.
