Reflection: It was bad enough for Jesus to lose his cousin and colleague in a gruesome way, but it carries a warning of what he personally faces in opposing the so-called powers-that-be.
Jesus’ response to his grief and this threat is to withdraw alone for a period. We can assume from other times we are told about his prayer life, that this was to commune with his Father. It would enable him to return undeflected from his mission and enter into an even wider ministry to the crowds. It is what makes him a model of resilience and perseverance.
How we live morally, spiritually and emotionally day by day, builds our ability to respond to sudden difficult challenges when they come. We build resources and wisdom when we regularly step back from the pressures and focus on Jesus.
Have you developed the habit of bringing all your circumstances to God the Father in prayer?
Prayer: My heart cries out to you, O God. Give me the resilience I need to face whatever comes before me. Amen.
