Reflection: Jesus’ words sound harsh, as if he is rejecting his family. But we know he cared for them – he thought of his mother on the cross as he died, and his brothers James and Jude were later church leaders and wrote two of the books in our Bible.
Sometimes Jesus uses hyperbole – stark statements to make his point, and here the point is that the relationships among his followers should be as close as family. He wants us all to discover great friendships and mutual support through Christians in our church community as well as at home.
There may, in fact, be times when our relationship with Jesus seems to be in conflict with responsibilities to our biological family. But using family ties as an excuse not to obey God’s call to service is making family an idol – putting family above God.
When that conflict in loyalty occurs, how do you decide the right thing to do?
Prayer: Jesus, we need wisdom like yours to decide how to follow you faithfully as well as care well for our family. Help us hear your voice of love and insight. Amen.
