Reflection: If we had been there to see this healing, we might have had questions we need Jesus to answer. Was this just an unexpectedly fast recovery from mental illness? Or, where does demonic activity come from to possess a person? In contrast, the people of Jesus’ day had no doubt the man was healed, but they had different questions. Who was this Jesus? Where did he get this power? The Pharisees wanted to know Jesus’ connection to Beelzebub, the prince of demons. Jesus’ answer was very clear: it was by the Spirit of God that he drove out demons. And the Spirit was stronger than any opposition (Matthew 12:28).
Jesus then warns them not to speak against the Holy Spirit. His stern words sometimes cause anguish for those of tender conscience, fearing they might have offended against God’s Spirit by giving credit to another power. But we can be sure that those who align themselves with God’s Spirit, experience freedom, not condemnation.
Prayer: Jesus, I long for your healing of painful memories from the past and my fears for the future. Remind me again and again that through your Spirit, you are stronger than anything that comes against me. Amen.
