Reflection: This feeding of the 5,000 is a miracle, demonstrating Jesus’ power as well as his compassion. The story, the only one told in all four gospels, significantly involves food, because food in a desert was an important theme for these people. God had fed their forebears with manna on their Exodus wanderings to the Promised Land. Jesus, who is God, feeds them still.
But what strikes me also about this story is that it illustrates compassion and common-sense working together. I once read of a missionary who started to give food to a hungry crowd and it caused a riot, leading to several deaths.
Jesus directs the more than 5,000 people to sit down on the grass in an orderly fashion and instructs his disciples to hand out the food. No pushing or shoving. In fact, there is even bread and fish left over. No doubt it was also a lesson in faith for those disciples.
Prayer: Lord, you are the God of order as well as of surprising provision. Give me common sense and patience to serve you and your children well. Amen.
