Reflection: This story reads like the previous feeding of the 5,000, but there are enough differences to show it is another event. It is summer, people are sitting on bare ground, and most importantly, it occurs outside Israel.
The puzzle is why the disciples don’t anticipate this second miracle. Haven’t they learnt from the first time that Jesus’ compassion for people stranded far from home would prompt him to multiply the food? Couldn’t he do it again?
It may be that they didn’t expect him to provide food for Gentile outsiders. Yet the initial promise to Abraham was that through him and his Jewish nation, all the world would be blessed. Fortunately, today we know that the blessing comes through Jesus. He is the God-man whose death and resurrection is for everyone.
Perhaps we should not be too hard on the disciples. We also forget to trust that what God has done in the past he can do again.
Prayer: Jesus, we know you are our saviour and our source of wisdom. Remind us of your past blessings to us when we are forgetting to trust you in our next challenge. Amen.
