Reflection: Jesus has more to teach about the good purpose of the Sabbath rest. In this next incident, just prior to these verses, Jesus’ critics clearly expect he can heal the man with a withered hand – they just don’t think he should do it on the Sabbath! Distressed by this, Jesus knows they would rescue their own animal on a Sabbath. Why not a person? It showed they didn’t understand the blessings of the Sabbath.
God’s grace comes to us in all dimensions of our lives. Sometimes, Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath, gives wholeness through a miracle of healing, but this shalom wholeness is more than physical well-being. And it is a gift in the ordinary routines of life as well as in the spectacular; it can be experienced in weakness and in God-given patience. All we need to do is put out our hands and receive it. And say thanks.
Are you experiencing Sabbath wholeness in your everyday life?
Prayer: How I want to be whole in every part of my life, Jesus. Teach me the way you created me to live and help me share that with others whose lives are messy and broken. Amen.
