Reflection: We know that when parents say: “Wash your mouth out!” they are not suggesting their child has eaten poison food. It is that the thoughts behind the words they have just said are unacceptable.
The criticism the religious leaders were levelling at Jesus’ disciples this time was an external one – that they were not ritually washing their hands before eating. Jesus makes the point that the inner heart attitude is what matters.
Indeed, the religious leaders’ attitudes were not godly. Jesus instanced a clever way they had devised to avoid the clear commandment to honour father and mother (Matthew 15:3-6).
A benefit of working in other cultures as I do, is that you see your own culture more clearly. You notice for the first time some of the wrong or disproportionate values you hold. These religious leaders, whose earnestness brought them chasing Jesus all the way from Jerusalem, were blind to theirs. Jesus is saying: Examine your heart.
Prayer: Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Amen.
