Reflection: Finally, Jesus gets his break. Although his compassionate concern for people forced him to postpone his retreat, he still needs it. In his humanity he was as affected by physical and emotional exhaustion as we are. Surrendering to God-given rhythms of effort and rest, spiritual expenditure and recovery, is part of recognising the Creator’s good provision for a healthy life, including refreshing sleep – another of God’s provisions for regular refreshment.
But again, his disciples need him. Does he ever tire, as we do, of the demands his children make? In wisdom he knows to let them toil for some hours in their own effort, but eventually he goes to them, and his presence makes all the difference. His disciples are calmed and reassured by his physical presence. Physical presence is a gift we too can give others in the name of Jesus. But we need to know that God-presence for ourselves first.
Prayer: Jesus, I want to live wisely in this body you have created for me. Remind me when I am not taking good care of it and help me rest well in your loving presence. Amen.
