Reflection: One church I know painted a mural on their wall of Jonah and the large fish with a caption that read “The sign of Jonah”. I often wondered if those who saw it knew what Jesus meant by “the sign of Jonah”.
The Pharisees who were shadowing Jesus knew what it meant. They knew Jonah’s message to the city of Nineveh was “Repent!” and that, to Jonah’s surprise, these foreign people did repent and acknowledge the one true God.
Jesus’ critics were not happy to be reminded of their need to repent, and even less happy with what he said next, comparing Jonah’s three days in the fish to his own coming time in the grave before he was resurrected. Jesus went further, hinting that the good news of salvation through his death for those who repented, would stretch further than the fame of their hero, king Solomon, whose temple brought a Queen of distant Sheba to see its glory.
“Repent!” is Jesus’ word to us too as we acknowledge his sovereignty over us.
Prayer: Lord, are you prompting me to repent in some area of my life? Help me bow to your gracious rule and lead me into new paths of righteousness. Amen.
