Reflection: (Further reading: Matthew 12:1-5)
Jesus takes the incidental moments in life to teach his disciples. Just prior to these verses, his disciples are hungry, moving through a field on the Sabbath, and take some grain to eat. The self-righteous Pharisees immediately criticise Jesus and harshly remind him that in their understanding this is work, not to be done on the Sabbath. Rules apply!
So Jesus goes back to first principles. Who thought of the Sabbath first? God did, resting and enjoying his completed work on the seventh day of creation. Life for Jesus’ followers was to be like that too, enjoying God’s blessings. They were not to try to earn his favour by rules or rituals.
To protect the precious gift of rest that grace gives us, we sometimes have to put sensible fences around our activities. But when we want to know how to manage life, looking at the first principles of creation in Genesis is the starting point.
Prayer: Lord, sometimes I don’t know how to live a godly life. Please show me how I can rest in the grace you offer, enjoying all your good gifts while actively serving you. Amen.
