16So John said to all of them, “I baptize you with water, but someone is coming who is much greater than I am. I am not good enough even to untie his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17He has his winnowing shovel with him, to thresh out all the grain and gather the wheat into his barn; but he will burn the chaff in a fire that never goes out.”
Reflection: As part of his job, John tells the people about this coming Messiah, and we learn three things about him. First of all, he is more powerful than John. This makes sense because although John is a prophet of God, Jesus is the Son of God. Second, he will baptise people with a different kind of baptism, one that installs the Holy Spirit within each believer, refining them and giving them eternal life. And third, one of the reasons he has come is to bring judgement.
Question: Does this sound like the Jesus you know?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I praise you for your son Jesus Christ. Please help me see him for who he is and not who I want him to be. Amen.
