Reflection: The Divine Fullness
Australia is no stranger to the perils of drought. Day after day of endless dry heat quickly becomes restrictions on water usage. In Sydney we keep a close eye on the supply levels of our reservoir, Warragamba Dam (91% as I write), because water is precious!
Now, us city slickers might feel the pinch of drought in our unmet desires for a clean car, or a growing grocery bill. But for those who live on the land, drought is never frivolous. Water is life, and a lack threatens everything.
There is no lack within Jesus. He comes full of grace and truth.
Jesus tenderly offers living water to the Samaritan woman by the well. ‘Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life’ (John 4:13). A spring of endless generation of life within us!
Jesus generously feeds the impoverished hungry crowd. From five loaves and two fish he feeds 5,000 men, along with women and children, with leftovers to boot!
They follow thinking he might be their endless human bakery, but Jesus lightly suggests there is more important food he can give them — himself, the bread of life! (John 6:26)
There is no lack within Jesus. We will never drain his reservoir of grace and truth dry.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, you are overflowing with all that I need. You are the fullness of the Living God, and you have enough grace and life for the entire universe, and certainly enough for me. Amen.
