Reflection: The Divine Adoption
The gospel is a chest filled to the brim with treasure. Each piece is precious.
Just think about all our big theology words ending with ‘-tion’, or ‘-ment’, such as: atonement, substitution, redemption.
With clearer language? No more condemnation, judgement, guilt or shame. Life, light and love are all ours as we receive Jesus as our Saviour. Yes, and amen!
But is there something higher than the rest? J.I. Packer suggests:
“Adoption is the highest privilege of the gospel. The traitor is forgiven, brought in for supper, and given the family name. To be right with God the Judge is a great thing, but to be loved and cared for by God the Father is greater.”
Christ stepped into the world to find weary sinners and draw them back to God. Not only as friends but as family!
The Apostle Paul expands the beauty in Romans 8:15-16:
‘… the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.’
Knowing God like this changes everything. ‘Abba, Father’ is an intimate cry of love from a child. Because of Jesus, you are a cherished son or daughter of the Living God.
A little girl stumbles? Her father is there.
A little boy fears? His father holds him tight.
When you fail or fall? Your Father will never abandon you.
Do you know this? When we receive Christ, God becomes our Father. He loves you more than you can imagine. He will never leave you nor forsake you.
Prayer:
Abba, Father. You love me, you are with me, and you are for me. Thank you for being my Father. I love you. Amen.
