Reflection: The Divine Creator
The Divine Word is the Divine Creator. We might be amazed but not surprised if we cast our minds back to Genesis. How did God create in the beginning? A spoken word. ‘Let there be X, Y, Z’. And ‘whoosh (my own addition), it was so’.
Well, John would have us behold Jesus in that explosion of generative power at creation. Light, land, seas, and creatures pour forth from the power of the Eternal Son. He gives us the positive (all things) and the negative (nothing) so there’s no confusion: Christ made it all.
The Apostle Paul adds some colour to the picture in Colossians 1:16-17:
‘For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.’
Think about this closely. How did creation begin to exist? Through him. How does creation continue to exist? In him. Why does creation exist in the first place? For him.
So then, why did the Creator enter into his own creation? For us.
What mystery! What majesty! The love of God is higher, deeper and wider than we could ever imagine.
Prayer:
Holding all of creation together in your Divine Power, you became part of what you made. All because you love the world, and you love me. Thank you, Lord. Amen.
