Series Introduction
There are two sides to the Christmas coin. We can consider the incarnation with our feet planted on earth: baby Jesus, born of a Virgin, lowly in a manger, surrounded by shepherds. In this way, we contemplate the humble beginning of our Saviour. Yet in this devotional series, we will ponder the other side of the Christmas coin. We will consider the incarnation with our feet planted in heaven. For the next 14 days, we’ll walk slowly through John Chapter 1, as Nick Wood leads us in pulling different threads to contemplate the Divine Beauty of the Incarnation.
Reflection: The Divine Word
Look around. What do you notice?
I’m writing from my favourite cafe, surrounded by people and coffee. The leaves on the tree are vibrant green. The dirt on the floor is muddy brown. I see cups, muffins, cars, tables, and chairs. Name anything you can see and there is one truth that will unite them.
They all share a beginning.
Have you ever thought about the time before? Before matter, atoms and the laws of physics? When existence as we know it was yet to exist? Folding our minds around that thought is harder than expert-level pilates.
Into our confusing bundle of questions and thoughts, the first four words of the Bible speak: ‘In the beginning God’ (Genesis 1:1).
There is One who always exists, even before existence. Every beginning traces back through aeons of time to find its ‘first’ in God. You and I included. And this is the beauty of John chapter 1.
Jesus is the Divine Word. Not only with God, He is God. He is above and before all things.
When we gaze in the human eyes of Christ, we are beholding Divine depths filled with eternity.
Sacrifice, Saviour, and Servant. All of the reasons we adore Jesus suddenly reach a higher pitch. Because behind each? There is a Divine reality that fills them with unquenchable glory.
Prayer:
My Lord Jesus, your Majesty is so far beyond my wildest thought. In the fullness of your glory, I turn my heart to you in worship. Amen.
