Reflection: The Divine Light
If you’ve ever floundered in a blackout without candles, you know how precious light is. Stubbed toes and bruised knees bear witness to the painful reality of darkness.
I know I don’t need to convince you that the world is dark. Sin in ourselves and sin in others. Our breaking bodies on a groaning earth. Disease, war, and famine over there. Loneliness, mental health, and life crises over here.
Enter Jesus.
Not simply bearing a torch but blazing with light in himself. He proclaimed, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life’ (John 8:12).
The darkness tried its very best to overcome Jesus, and it seemed to come close. The final breath of Jesus may have seemed a great victory for the forces of darkness! But that very moment was darkness’ very defeat. His final breath? ‘It is finished.’
He remains the shining light of the world for all who would follow him through this dark world. As we take up our cross and follow him, we may feel darkness’ weight. But it’s the same irony as the crucifixion. Victory and resurrection are our certainty when we follow the light of the world.
Here’s the next verse of the hymn from yesterday:
O Light that follows all my way,
I yield my flick’ring torch to thee.
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
that in thy sunshine’s blaze its day
may brighter, fairer be.
“O Love that Will Not Let Me Go,” George Matheson, 1882
Prayer:
Lord, I wander and walk where I choose, and so often flounder in the darkness. Illuminate my way. You are the Light of the World and so I choose to walk after you. Amen.
