Reflection: The Divine Abundance
If you were God made flesh, what would be the first sign you’ve come? You could do anything! Invisibility? Fireworks display? Clean laundry automatically folding itself?
The first sign of Jesus’ glory? He turns water into wine at a wedding (John 2:1-12).
There is so much to love about this scene:
- Jesus is unashamedly enjoying a party, defying every legalistic depiction.
- He covers over potential shame for ordinary newlyweds without them knowing.
- He works this miracle anonymously, letting the groom be praised.
But a few details for us to focus on:
- The water used by Jesus was set aside for ceremonial purification. Jesus is marking a moment where the old (note the mention of Moses in John 1:17) gives way to something new.
- Wine marks a tangible blessing from God (Deut 7:13), and the promised age is marked by ‘a banquet of aged wine’ (Isa 25:6). Wine matters. But even more, Jesus’ wine was delicious!
- Jesus simply goes overboard. Six stone jars, each holding 75-115L of water. We’re looking at 450-690L of wine. Picture 600-920 ordinary bottles of wine.
Ritual and ceremony are overtaken by delicious wine of blessing, overflowing to all who would enjoy it. This is Divine Abundance in living metaphor!
Back to John 1. ‘We have all received grace in place of grace already given.’ Jesus offers grace upon grace. He gives more than we could ever ask or imagine!
Come and drink deeply from the new wine of Jesus, there is plenty for all who would come.
Prayer:
Oh Lord, there is more grace in you than I can ever imagine. You lavish your love upon your people in abundance. Thank you for life and life to the full. Amen.
