Reflection: The Divine Priority
If you ever see a tattoo on my body, it will probably be John 3:30. However you feel about tattoos, certain Scriptures grow more precious to us than others. They become tethers for our soul, holding us fast to God. A few of mine: Proverbs 4:23, Philippians 1:21, and Colossians 2:6-7.*
Above any other verse, I always return to John 3:30: ‘He must become greater; I must become less’
John the Baptist is an important biblical player. He’s a greatly awaited prophet. He’s the waymaker for the Messiah. He’s an influential preacher. He built a fruitful ministry. Jesus even says there’s no one more important than John prior to the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 11:11)
John is the real deal. But not as we expect. His greatness is his lowliness.
John’s disciples see Jesus and have a meltdown. ‘John! That guy is pulling all our followers!’ They’re full of fear. Their success is threatened. Their ministry is unstable. Their future is uncertain. ‘What do we do?!’ John, full of joy, says:
‘He must become greater; I must become less’
We gravitate to greatness. We crave the praise of people. But the harsh truth? Pursuing pride is spiritual poison. Fullness flows from Christ! Life flows from Christ! Grace flows from Christ! All we long for is in him, not in us.
Don’t ‘seek his greatness’ in a way that you also find some praise and privilege along the way. ‘I’m building a platform for you, Jesus!’ Be content in obscurity. Others might not know your name, but there is One who does. Long to be less in the eyes of the world. In that place, you will fall into the fullness of Jesus.
‘He must become greater; I must become less.’
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, may you become greater in my life as I fade into the background. May humility be my heart. May my joy in you increase as my love for the world fades. Amen.
*Side note: If you haven’t already, find a few key verses and memorise them. You’ll be making a spiritual investment with exponential return.
