Reflection: The Divine Rejection
Any who have known the sting of rejection know well its pain. The unseen wounds we carry in our hearts can hurt more than anything visible. Especially wounds from those closest to us. They hurt the most.
Have you thought much about the rejection Christ received? We know well the physical burden he bore on our behalf, but what about the unseen burden?
Creating all things and holding all things together, there is an invisible tether between every person and Jesus. Every part of a person continually exists by his power. Tragically, people use the breath given by Christ to curse Christ.
Think about yesterday’s reflection and remember the people Jesus first came to. God’s people of promise (and presence and provision) were those who turned away from him. His closest disciples abandoned him in his final hours. And as the years go on, people invited to his love continue to reject him.
Read the sorrowful words of the hymn ‘Despised and Rejected’ by Maud Frazer:
Despis’d and rejected, the dear Son of God,
When earth’s rugged paths to save sinners, He trod!
Despis’d and rejected by many today!
Shall I, too, refuse him, from love turn away?
Our journey as Christians is to grasp more and more of the fullness of the love of Christ (Ephesians 3:14-21). Rather than grieve, we draw nearer in adoration. What a fresh angle of his love! What fuel for the fire of our worship!
Contemplate his love anew today. May our hearts be stirred with affection as we behold him.
Prayer:
Lord, I have only a hint of the pain you endured as you walked the path of the cross. But with what I know I turn to you in worship. Thank you, Jesus, for carrying my burden so I can walk free. Amen.
