Reflection: The Divine Truth
The modern world is sceptical of truth. We’re all in agreement on some truth, like the downward pull of gravity or the deliciousness of coffee. But between big media, monetised advertising, shady political operators, and biased institutions? Truth is on trial.
Questioning truth isn’t new, it’s just in vogue again. Pilate interrogates Jesus in John 18-19. Jesus says, ‘Everyone on the side of truth listens to me’, to which Pilate hits back, ‘What is truth?’ Confident words.
Yet … Pilate shakes. He wavers. Fear grows and grows. What if Jesus is who he says he is? Pilate even tries to free him! But…the Jews threaten to twist a truth of their own all the way to Caesar and Pilate’s greater fear wins out. The next trial might be his. So? Off Jesus goes to die.
The crucifixion is full of heart-breaking irony. Liars lie, scoffers scoff, God is called godless, and Truth himself is condemned a liar. Pilate asked, ‘What is truth?’ Behold! He is the man breathing his last upon your wooden cross.
Jesus doesn’t just say true things, he is truth (John 14:6). Coming from the Father, the Son is as full of truth as he is of grace, and we glimpse both in abundance upon the cross.
Because Jesus is the Divine Truth, Jesus is trustworthy. He can bear the weight of your life:
- ’Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever’ (Hebrews 13:8). In a world where security is fleeting, and people are imperfect, trust in he who is unchangingly true.
- ‘For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ’ (2 Corinthians 1:20). In a world full of empty promises and blatant lies, depend upon the promises of God sealed in truth by the Truth on the cross.
- ‘Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock’ (Matthew 7:24). In a world of constant noise and competing voices, slow down to build your life upon the Divine truth.
Prayer:
God, you are unchanging and faithful. What you promise is true and sealed in Christ crucified. Here I am with all of my life, help me build upon the rock. Amen.
