6 When Paul saw that some of the group were Sadducees and the others were Pharisees, he called out in the Council, “Fellow Israelites! I am a Pharisee, the son of Pharisees. I am on trial here because of the hope I have that the dead will rise to life!”
7As soon as he said this, the Pharisees and Sadducees started to quarrel, and the group was divided. ( 8 For the Sadducees say that people will not rise from death and that there are no angels or spirits; but the Pharisees believe in all three.)
Reflection: Paul declares that he believes in the resurrection – that he believes God raises people from the dead and that God has demonstrated his power to do this by raising Jesus from the dead. As Christians, we stand with the Pharisees in this matter and declare to the Sadducees around us that there is life after death – that we believe in the power of the resurrection. We have hope when those around us are consumed by efforts to put off ageing for as long as they possibly can: every wrinkle, every grey hair, every ache and pain suggests that death and decay will eventually consume us as well as all of creation. But we believe in life
and life eternal.
Question: How can we share eternal life with those around us for whom death appears to be the final destination?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, you have defeated death by dying and rising again. Help us to be people who love life and wish to share the good news of eternal life with those around us. Amen
