Around the world with the Bible

Day 7 of 7

CEV

Isaiah 55:8-11

“My thoughts,” says the Lord, “are not like yours, and my ways are different from yours.  As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways and thoughts above yours.  My word is like the snow and the rain that come down from the sky to water the earth.  They make the crops grow and provide seed for planting and food to eat.  So also, will be the word that I speak— it will not fail to do what I plan for it. it will do everything I send it to do.” – Isaiah 55:8-11 (GNT)

Reflection: Fiji

How often do we take for granted the amount of biblical resources at our fingertips?

Yet the speakers of more than half the world’s languages have no Scripture at all — 1.46 billion people speaking 3,710 languages.

In Fiji, many people have longed for a Study Bible which would make God’s word easily understood, available, accessible, and credible to native Fijian speakers. After receiving many requests, Bible Society of the South Pacific have worked for almost three decades to be able to publish the first Study Bible in the Fijian (Bauan) language (spoken as the heart language of approximately 450,000 ethnic Fijians).

Translating the Bible into a community’s heart language enables each individual to understand and connect with God’s word deeply and personally. It ensures that Scripture is not just read but felt, internalised, and lived out. Language carries cultural nuances and meanings that are vital for accurate comprehension and application. When people receive the Bible in their own heart language, it fosters spiritual growth and strengthens faith.

How can you cultivate a deeper understanding of God’s word in your own life and in the lives of those around you?

Prayer:

Father, we thank you for the dedication and perseverance of those who have brought the first Study Bible in the Fijian language to the people of Fiji. May this Bible be a source of light, wisdom, and deep connection to your word for all who read it. May your word continue to inspire, guide, and strengthen the faith of the Fijian community. Amen.
