Jesus is expanding on his Sermon on the Plain (Luke 6:17–49) in which he called on disciples to not just love their neighbours, but even their enemies. Here he completely collapses the two categories: your enemy is, in fact, your neighbour! And what’s
more, maybe you have something to learn from your enemy about what it means to ‘be a neighbour’ – empathetic, kind, caring, and not counting the cost.
Question: Is there a person, or perhaps a whole community or nation, who you tend to think of as your ‘enemy’? What would happen if you devoted your energy to seeing them instead as your neighbour? Could you even learn something from them?
Prayer: God of all nations, we pray for our enemies, and for those our country teaches us to fear. Through Christ’s sacrificial love may we overcome our natural tendencies to define an
‘us’ and a ‘them’, and instead learn to be neighbours to all we meet. Amen.
