Refugees: God's concern

Day 4 of 14

GNT

Psalm 146:9

9He protects the strangers who live in our land;

he helps widows and orphans,

but takes the wicked to their ruin.

This group of vulnerable people appear together throughout the Bible, so they are no accident. By contrast, we don’t hear so much about God watching over the comfortably middle-class. It’s not that God doesn’t love us all equally, it’s that this love requires lifting up the vulnerable
and oppressed, so that all might live life to the full. The Bible makes it clear this is our calling, as individuals and as nations.

Question:  What would it mean if we were to follow God’s heart and place the vulnerable – and even the foreigner – at the centre of our concern?

Prayer:  Praise the Lord, my soul! You are the maker of heaven and earth, you are faithful forever. You watch over the foreigner, and sustain the fatherless and the widow: teach me to do the same, that all of us may have abundant life. Amen.

We are reading the Bible with Justin Whelan  until 16 June.

Psalm 146:1-10

In Praise of God the Savior

1Praise the Lord!

Praise the Lord, my soul!

2I will praise him as long as I live;

I will sing to my God all my life.

3Don't put your trust in human leaders;

no human being can save you.

4When they die, they return to the dust;

on that day all their plans come to an end.

5Happy are those who have the God of Jacob to help them

and who depend on the Lord their God,

6 the Creator of heaven, earth, and sea,

and all that is in them.

He always keeps his promises;

7he judges in favor of the oppressed

and gives food to the hungry.

The Lord sets prisoners free

8and gives sight to the blind.

He lifts those who have fallen;

he loves his righteous people.

9He protects the strangers who live in our land;

he helps widows and orphans,

but takes the wicked to their ruin.

10The Lord is king forever.

Your God, O Zion, will reign for all time.

Praise the Lord!
