What follows in chapter 22 is a list of sins, beginning with our text for today. It is no accident that oppression of foreigners and mistreatment of orphans and widows is top of the list: as we have observed earlier in this series, the command to care for this vulnerable trio is absolutely central to the Torah,
or law. And Ezekiel is making it clear that they will be judged by how they care for the vulnerable, much more than on observance of religious practices.
Question: If Ezekiel were to look upon our churches in Australia, what would he see?
Prayer: God our Lord and our judge, we confess that we often fail to live up to your expectations on us. Thank you for the prophets who preach your words of judgement and hope among us, then and now. Amen.
