Reflection:
“Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear! Those who hear and don’t act are like those who glance in the mirror, walk away, and two minutes later have no idea who they are, what they look like.” James 1:22-24 (MSG)
Recently we visited my parents-in-law, down the far south coast of NSW on a sizeable property which requires quite a lot of up keep. While we were there, we offered to collect the firewood that was scattered around the property. When I started loading the wood into the trailer my husband suggested that I wear gloves, as there might be spiders. Internally I rolled my eyes as I thought he was being overly cautious, but I decided to heed to his warning. We then went on to find four funnel web spiders and three huntsman spiders! *GASP*. My husband grew up on the property and knew what he was talking about. Thankfully, I listened; otherwise I may well have gotten bitten!
It made me think about the times that I ignore anything other than what’s in my mind, because I think I know better. I am the worst at following recipes…I often improvise. I don’t follow instructions on washing clothes… and have shrunk, on more than one occasion, my husband’s wool jumpers, which now belong to me. *insert face palm*
If I refuse to listen to instruction, I will not remain teachable.
Consider: if we don’t remain teachable, than how do we expect to learn and grow in our walk with God?
Prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, too often are think we are listeners of your word, when really we retain very little. Please help us to listen and respond to what we have heard. Amen.
