Reflection: Who should I be? Much of the world encourages self-promotion. We may see individuals who are in the spotlight for fame, fortune or power and assume they live a fulfilled life. Even back in the 4th Century, a young wild scholar named Augustine left home to pursue similar ends. Yet, pursuing the ‘limelight’ does not satisfy and leaves many still longing.
Later, when Augustine saw the error of his ways, he wrote that as humans, we are not our own light but bear witness to the Light. At times, in a complex world, it is tempting to fall into the ego-focused, self-promotion mode and think that it is the light we want. It is also tempting to envy when the arrogant prosper (Ps 73:1-5). Yet, Jesus calls us to him, the Light of the World, and to be children of that light, bearing witness to the Light.
Question: Who do you long to be? How can Jesus, the True Light who gives Light to the World, be the model of who you should be?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you that I do not find light in myself, but in Jesus. Help me to live this day as a child of the light and bring light to a dark world, for your glory. Amen.
