Reflection: Who should we follow? Who should we listen to? From influencers on Twitter and Instagram through to TED talks and politicians, we are constantly looking for people to follow. There is a deep longing that their advice, actions, or moments of amusement may provide some insight into – or relief from – our own lives. Throughout this series, we are going to follow what Jesus says. Jesus’ first words in John’s gospel may not seem like they would lead to a great following: “What do you want?” Yet, something drew the first disciples to Jesus. John the Baptist had told them Jesus was greater than him and that he was the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29-30). The disciples immediately declared that Jesus is ‘Rabbi’, teacher.
In a world where we can scroll through, follow, and listen to so many, Jesus truly enlightens. He gives us insight into our lives and the world around us as the True Light. He gives us the relief we deeply need when he takes away our sin.
Question: Who do you follow and listen to? How might Jesus change your view of what is worth following?
Prayer: Dear Father, I thank you for sending Jesus who is worthy to follow. May I follow him as the True Light. May I hold onto his words as he enlightens my life and takes away my sin. Amen.
