Reflection: Where is justice? From an early age, we have a deep longing for things to be fair. Disney highlights this so easily: we want the ‘goodies’ to win and the ‘baddies’ to lose. In our complex world, it is not always as easy to work out those goodies and baddies. Yet we still hope that people will receive justice, especially the downtrodden.
Here, Jesus replies to the Pharisees who are challenging his authority to heal on the Sabbath. A man deeply longed to be well and, in his justice and mercy, Jesus healed him.
Although we have a deep longing for justice and fairness, as flawed humans, we cannot achieve it. Thankfully, God sent Jesus into this unjust and unfair world. Jesus, the True Judge, both God and man, knows we need a just judge who also offers forgiveness. With all the uncertainty in the world, we can be certain that Jesus will bring justice in the end.
Question: What justice do you long to see? How can Jesus, the True Judge, help you when life seems unfair?
Prayer: Gracious God, you always judge justly. Help me to see others the way you see them. Help me to act in the ways of justice and help me to forgive, just as you forgive me. Amen.
