Reflections: Like the masked and flamboyant grappling luchadores of Mexico, wrestlers in Paul’s time would seek to strike down their opponents. Unlike the performance of a luchador, an ancient wrestler would often strike their opponent to the death. Yet like the persecution Paul faced, being ‘struck down’ was not fatal! Paul discovered that he was not rescued from the situations, but neither was he forsaken or destroyed. He bounced back.
Questions: Why do you think Paul valued not being forsaken
during persecution? How have you experienced companionship in the middle of being hounded?
Prayer: As hymn-writer Timothy Dudley-Smith wrote: “Lord of life triumphant, risen now to reign, King of endless ages take my life and save.” Lord, when I am pursued give me rest, when knocked down give me resilience, when drawn thin give me strength. Amen.
