Reflections: Most of us are taught that ‘the ends do not justify the means’, or in other words just because the outcome is good it does not matter how we get there. Paul’s great vocation was to share the news of the freedom that Jesus brings. Like all who want to persuade others of a new and better way of seeing the world the temptation to ‘tweak’ the message so that it was that little bit more persuasive would have been strong. Yet Paul knew that it was not his skill that could change others. The power that he brought came from a different place. This meant
that the way he went about his life mattered, as well as the outcomes that he might produce.
Questions: How are you called to balance your conduct before others and before God? When are you tempted to ‘dress up’ your faith so that it is a bit more successful?
Prayer: Father, sometimes it is easy to paint ourselves in a favourable light so that others line up with us. May you show me what pleases you and may that be enough for me. Amen.
