Reflection: God has created us as emotional beings, in his likeness. Jesus expressed a range of emotions; the Bible records times when he was angry, had compassion, and in this instance, Jesus wept following the death of a beloved friend, Lazarus. Whilst we usually focus on the amazing miracle that followed, when Lazarus was raised from the dead, I want us to consider the emotion – sorrow – that was being expressed by these people, including Jesus. It is significant to note that Jesus gave no rebuke for the peoples’ sadness – Jesus was sad too! We need to be able to express our emotions. It can be an important part of our journey. It can be unhealthy to deny how we are really feeling. Bottling up grief or sorrow is not a sustainable way to live.
If you have been through a sad life event, allow yourself to feel sad. There will be seasons where you may need to express sorrow. These seasons do not last forever.
Being emotionally healthy means you are aware of your emotions, whether they are positive or negative and knowing how to deal with them effectively.
Prayer: Lord, give me the courage to express my emotions in ways that bring me healing and restoration. Help me have an awareness of my emotions and to deal with my emotions in healthy ways. Amen.
