Reflection: Exhaustion and burnout can affect anyone. Even very godly servants, such as Elijah, have been affected by burnout; it seems to be what he is experiencing here in I Kings 19. After Elijah’s great victory against the 450 prophets of Baal in 1 Kings 18, a person threatens to kill him, and Elijah runs away and hides alone in the wilderness. He appears to be exhausted and pleads with God to end his life! God allows him to sleep and provides food and water for him. God listens to Elijah’s worries and concerns. Elijah is reminded of God’s power in the storms and provision and is soon restored to go on to a new task. Elijah rested, sought God, and listened to God and then was refreshed by him to resume serving.
You may be feeling exhausted now, and may worry you are close to burnout, but it does not mean “the end” or that you are “washed up”. After a season of rest and refreshment, you will be able to go on and do what it is that God has called you to do. Take some small steps today to rest and refresh and be expectant that God will meet your needs.
Prayer: Lord, I rely on you. I am weak and tired – I look to you for strength and refreshment. I trust in you and ask you to lead me today. In Jesus name. Amen.
