Reflection: Jesus gave us instructions in how to pray (Matthew 6:9-13). Part of the Lord’s Prayer is to ask for forgiveness for what we have done wrong and to forgive others who have wronged us. I like to keep short accounts with God, which means I choose to ask him daily for forgiveness for my wrongdoings. I sometimes struggle to keep that same approach in how I forgive others. If you have been falsely accused of something, or misunderstood, or wronged in some way – even by a loved one, it can take a great amount of willpower to decide to forgive that person. Having unforgiveness in our hearts and lives can cause bitterness to grow, which is not healthy or good for us – spiritually and emotionally. The simple solution is to keep short accounts with ourselves in forgiving others sooner rather than putting it off or deliberately choosing unforgiveness. Daily may be a good target to forgive others. That way, we can come to God with a clean heart and leave no room for bitterness to grow. We are following his example – he has chosen to forgive us.
Prayer: Lord, forgive me for the wrong things I have done – actions, words I have said and my thoughts. Help me to forgive those who have wronged me. Today I choose to forgive _____ Amen.
