Who has believed what we have heard? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by others; a man of suffering and acquainted with infirmity;
and as one from whom others hide their faces he was despised, and we held him of no account.
Isaiah 53:1-3(NSRV)
Reflection: This passage describes God’s servant as one who will prosper and be exalted to a very high position; yet he is one whose appearance and form made him despised and rejected, and was experienced with suffering and sickness. This Servant does not look like a king, and experiences great rejection and pain.
Question: What connection is there between the servant and God, who is speaking? What can we know of their relationship?
Prayer: Father thank you that your servant will prosper and be lifted up greatly. Thank you that physical appearance and the attitude of other humans are not your criteria for value. Amen.
