Reflection: This passage emphasises the shepherd-like character of the King in the coming Kingdom, as God draws near. God’s sanctuary is set among his people forever, and an everlasting covenant is established. These beautiful images have come to fulfilment in the person of the Lord Jesus himself, Immanuel, ‘God come among us’. Jesus has made a covenant of peace and has promised he will be with us always; yet we also continue waiting for the full incoming of God’s Kingdom. Our passages over the last
fortnight have traced the themes of the Old testament expectation of the King and his Kingdom. Much has already been fulfilled in the life, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus; yet we still await for the time when he will bring his promises to completion. And so we pray, ‘come, Lord Jesus’.
Question: What is the relationship like between God and his people in this passage?
Prayer: Father, thank you that throughout history you have been at work – lovingly redeeming, healing and establishing your Kingdom. Thank you for your tender gentleness with us and your fierce hunger for justice and righteousness. Thank you for the Lord Jesus. Bring your Kingdom to completion
– come soon, Lord Jesus. Amen.
