Reflection: Zechariah’s song
Further reading Luke 1:67-79
Zechariah’s tongue is unleashed in praise and prophecy, as God’s new work is unleashed in the anointing of his new baby boy, to prepare the way for Jesus. Like his namesake – the prophet from the Old Testament who spoke of the Messiah and God’s return promising a glorious future for his people and for Jerusalem – this father saw a momentous role for his son, in helping to bring about this earlier prophecy.
Zechariah’s song (the Benedictus) celebrates the return of God and salvation through the forgiveness of sins. Do we see forgiveness as the source of salvation, not only for the person wronged but also for us? Do we see forgiveness as the pathway to be set free? Free to be restored to relationship with the other and with God?
Question: Zechariah gave witness to God’s redemption for the people he loves. How do we give witness to the emergence of love and justice in our own time?
Prayer: Zechariah’s song (Benedictus)
Blessed are you, Lord, the God of Israel, you have come to your people and set them free…Through your holy prophets, you promised of old: …to give God’s people knowledge of salvation: by the forgiveness of their sins. Amen.
