Reflection: The people at the temple
My favourite moments in church are always the unexpected ones! We can get so caught up in ‘doing a good job’ of our worship – elegant prayers, exceptional music, fresh and fabulous flowers – that we forget God is free of all of these forms. Whist our loving attention, care and ‘order of service’ is our act of worship, God is under no obligation to play by our rules!
This is why I love worship with our dementia day program participants. We make our way through all of the elements of a service of Holy Communion – Bible reading, prayers, bread and wine – but I must be alert the whole time to what is not able to be said. God lurks in memories of childhood, love is rekindled in non-sensical sentences, and peace descends inexplicably as we lean into God’s love with patience and a smile.
Question: When was the last time God interrupted your orderly experience of worship? What did you learn?
Prayer: Dear God, interrupt my orderly expectations of how you show up in the world. Open my eyes to see you wherever you choose to be today. Amen.
