Reflection: Mary’s song
Further reading: Luke 1:49-56
Inequalities of power abound across our world in a myriad of ways. Between rich and poor; between those with access to good health care and those who don’t; between women and men; between homeowners and home renters.
Mary’s Song, the Magnificat (which draws at least in part on the Song of Hannah from 1 Samuel 2) is an extraordinary and radical statement of God’s justice in the face of such inequality. It declares without question that God is on the side of the powerless. And by putting the song in the mouth of Mary, Luke makes an even bolder claim for his time about the value of women and their role in God’s justice-making.
The Magnificat is a challenge to all of us to reflect on our own relationship with power. To ponder how we can make the world a fairer place. Not just by helping people, but by changing the conditions that lead to inequality in the first place.
Question: Where are you most aware of unequal power in the world? What can you do to challenge this, to stand with God on the side of those who are denied the opportunities of others?
Prayer: God of justice, we thank you for standing with the powerless and for the passion for justice that we see in the life of Jesus. Give us courage to follow in his footsteps and to join with Mary in her song of praise. Amen.
