Reflection: Anna
Further reading Luke 2:36-37
When Mary and Joseph presented the infant Jesus in the temple, Anna the prophetess immediately recognised Jesus for who he was. Like Simeon, Anna saw the Messiah, the Saviour, the Redeemer. She began to give thanks to God and to speak about Jesus to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.
Redemption is a biblical word that means “a purchase” or “a ransom.” Historically, redemption was used in reference to the purchase of a slave’s freedom. The Jewish people were waiting for a Messiah to console and comfort them, but more so, a Messiah to buy their freedom and to restore their relationship with God. We know as Christians, that this is through the sacrifice of Jesus as a ransom for the sins which enslave us. The wait for a Saviour Redeemer is over.
Question: How do we buy people’s freedom and restore relationships in our own time? Perhaps, one way to start is through forgiveness. It is in our forgiveness of other people’s sins against us that we reveal the fact that we have been truly forgiven by God.
Prayer: O Divine master, help us to be redeemers in these times. For it’s in giving that we receive; and it’s in pardoning that we’re pardoned; and it’s in dying that we’re born to eternal life.* Amen!
