Reflection: Shepherds
Further reading Luke 2:12-20
The shepherds, just lowly shepherds, bear witness to the birth of Jesus and to the words from the angel of the Lord: “Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord”. They did not come bearing gifts, but when they had seen him, they spread the word and all who heard it were amazed.
How do we give witness to the emergence of love and justice in our own time? How do we come, not bearing gifts for the people whom we serve, but with words of affirmation and love and justice?
Perhaps our witness will be received as Mary received the words of the shepherds, where she treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. Perhaps our words and our effort to just come and visit will point to the God who also comes to his people to set them free.
Prayer: Zechariah’s song (Benedictus)
Blessed are you, Lord, the God of Israel, you have come to your people and set them free…Through your holy prophets, you promised of old: …to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death: and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Amen.
