Reflection: Joseph
Joseph had to return home to be included in the census conducted by the Romans for tax purposes. Our Australian Census was recently conducted, counting around 10 million households and over 25 million people, to provide information for governments, businesses, not-for-profit and community organisations to make decisions. As the 2021 theme said: ‘Every stat tells a story…’
Could the Roman and Jewish governors have envisaged the story of the Joseph and Mary’s son, the light that had come into the world in human form, the newborn Jesus who was the Christ? Two insignificant people who formed one household to nurture a child who would be counted as the most significant person of all time? Every stat tells a story indeed!
Question: How do we learn to focus on what really counts? How do we give witness that love and justice can emerge from the meanest homes and least significant people in our own time?
Prayer: Zechariah’s song (Benedictus)
Blessed are you, Lord, the God of Israel, you have come to your people and set them free…Through your holy prophets, you promised of old…In the tender compassion of our God: the dawn from on high shall break upon us. Amen.
