Reflection: John (from the womb)
It’s not often that we meet a central character in a story while they are still in the womb! But here we do, as John – who will become the Baptist – leaps into movement in the presence of Mary and the enwombed Jesus. We glimpse the mission of John to prepare the way for Jesus and we glimpse the mission of Jesus to bring life – quickening – to things yet to be born.
Those who are parents will no doubt remember that magical moment when they first felt the baby move in the womb. The sense of mystery and miracle of new life, of a larger narrative that we are privileged to be a part of. Luke captures this feeling here to invite us to reflect on the movement of God within us, the potential there is for us all to carry new life, and the importance of being open to this possibility, this moment of his Spirit.
Question: Is there a sense of mission in you that is waiting to be animated? What can you do to create some movement?
Prayer: Life-giving God, we give thanks for the wonder of new life and for the privilege of parenthood. May we, like John the Baptist, have a strong sense of our mission and place in the world and, in whatever we do, prepare the way for Jesus, and his gift of love. In Love’s name we pray, Amen.
