Reflection: Zechariah
Further reading Luke 1:5-20
I wonder sometimes about Zechariah. Was he a devoted and faithful man? Or was he somewhat complacent? Can we know what was truly in his heart? His story starts for us as he takes up his duty as a man of the priestly cast of the Jewish people. But he was taken aback when God also turned up.
He and his wife had borne no children, which in his time, likely sent the community gossips ablaze with possible reasons for his or her infertility: what did Zechariah do to deserve such judgement from God?
I wonder what state my faith would be in, if I had lived as long as Zechariah and had no sign of God’s good presence of grace in my life? I think of how working for justice involves long years of struggle and times when it feels hard to keep expecting God to show up!
But show up God does. And not just for Zechariah.
Question: How do you keep your faith alive and expectant whilst waiting for God to show up for you?
Prayer: Faithful God, reveal yourself to me today. In your goodness and grace, strengthen my faith. Amen.
